RICHMOND- Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell issued the following statement today in celebration of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday:
"Today we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his tireless work to ensure opportunity for all, regardless of race, region or religion. He sought to end discrimination and oppression so that we may all live equally and free from prejudice. Dr. King rose above hate, and did not accept violence as a means to an end. His actions changed a nation. For all this, and much more, he will forever be remembered as one of America's greatest leaders.
"As I begin my term as the 71st Governor of Virginia in a time of economic distress, Dr. King's call for service could not be more pertinent. Virginians followed the values and vision of Dr. King during the events leading up to my inauguration by donating their time, food and clothing to those in need. We must remember Dr. King's dream and continue these selfless acts in an effort to leave our Commonwealth a better place than we found it."
