Speaker Howell Names Members to Standing Committees of the Virginia House of Delegates

RICHMOND, VA - Following the opening of the 2010 General Assembly Session, Virginia House of Delegates Speaker William J. Howell (R-Stafford) today exercised his authority as presiding officer of the 100-member body to name all re-elected and newly elected delegates to the 14 standing committees of the House. Continuing the practice instituted by House Republicans since becoming the majority party in 2000, Speaker Howell has made his appointments to committees in accordance with the proportional representation of the body as a whole, which has 61 Republicans and Independents and 38 Democrats. The decision by Speaker Howell and House Republicans retain this rule of basic fairness means most standing committees - now including Appropriations - have 14 Republicans in the majority and 8 Democrats in the minority, or 22 members in all. The Rules Committee has 15 members.

William J. Howell is the 54th Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates and has led the 100-member chamber since 2003. First elected a delegate in 1987, he represents the 28th House District, which includes parts of Stafford County and the City of Fredericksburg. As Speaker, Howell performs a number of duties, including assigning all bills to House committees and appointing the chairs and members of each of the 14 standing committees of the House.
