GOVERNOR BREDESEN ADDRESSES BOYS STATE AND GIRLS STATE DELEGATES

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR

May 30, 2008

Governor Phil Bredesen addressed delegates of American Legion Boys State Tuesday in Cookeville and Volunteer Girls State, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Friday in Murfreesboro. Bredesen commended the two programs’ participants for demonstrating outstanding leadership abilities and a true affinity for public service at an early age.

“By simply being here, you have demonstrated an interest in government and an ability to engage in the political process. When you leave here, the challenge for you is to continue your adventure into public service,” Bredesen said.

“I encourage you to spend time in the coming months and years thinking about how you might best serve your community, state and country. It might be running for the state legislature or a higher office. It might be serving on the local zoning board or the school board. Just know that your present and future leadership is valued. You are the next generation of great Tennesseans. Your state and country need you.

“Also remember: Public service isn’t limited to elected office. It manifests itself in many different ways. It’s about serving in the military, volunteering to clean up a streambed or neighborhood, and helping those who can’t help themselves. The ways in which you can serve are many and varied, and the key is to finding the one you love to do, and devoting yourself to it. Take advantage of the running start that you now have in public service. Let the momentum carry you forward in a positive way that can affect countless lives.”
