A column by Secretary of State Robin Carnahan
In my family, spending summer afternoons reading at our local public library was a routine way to pass the time indoors. My local library and the programs it provided helped me develop a love for books and literature that continues to this day. Now, as Missouri’s Secretary of State I have the distinct honor of overseeing the Missouri State Library, which helps coordinate summer reading programs throughout the state.
So this summer, the Missouri State Library is encouraging young Missourians to participate in summer reading through two themed programs that allow young readers to exercise their minds.
Young Missourians looking for a fun way to stay busy this summer should sign up for “Catch the Reading Bug @ Your Library” to discover more about the world of insects through books at their own hometown library. “Catch the Reading Bug @ Your Library” focuses on learning amazing facts, reading great stories and attending wonderful programs all about insects. “Catch the Reading Bug @ Your Library” encourages young students to read regularly by providing them with rewards when they reach reading milestones.
Similarly, middle school and high school students can participate in “Metamorphosis @ Your Library,” which is designed to help older students continue reading for pleasure.
Participants who reach their personal reading goals will earn rewards and will be eligible to win additional prizes free of cost. To learn more details please contact your local public library. If you would like to find the library nearest you visit http://www.sos.mo.gov/MOLLI/Home.aspx.
Although summer vacations, sports teams and spending time outdoors keeps you busy all summer long, don’t forget the importance of summer reading. Reading keeps children’s minds engaged over the long summer break away from school. So, encourage the young people around you to stop by your local library to discover the many varieties of books available this summer.
