HANNIBAL Gov. Matt Blunt today toured Hannibal and Canton and credited volunteers as well as local, state and federal officials for their quick and efficient efforts to get needed supplies and resources into the areas threatened by rising flood waters.

"Over the past week, we moved quickly to ensure the state is doing everything within its power to ensure resources are easily accessible to our communities," Gov. Blunt said. "I am grateful for the service the Guard provides our state when called upon and I know they are ready once again to assist Missourians in need. More than anything, I commend and thank the countless volunteers joining forces to stand strong against the rising water. Their unity, their selflessness and their efforts embody our states hope that we will stand strong against this threat."

Gov. Blunt commended Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, state emergency management officials and local governments on their aggressive campaign to identify key resources and engage the fastest methods to deploy sandbags, pumps and other necessary equipment. Volunteers have been an integral player in the states flood response efforts by helping to fill and place sandbags and assisting Missouri families at shelters.

Gov. Blunt praised the work of Missouris National Guard who have deployed nearly 700 Guardsmen and women to aid in the states flood response efforts. Guard members are currently assisting with sandbagging efforts, levee monitoring and limited security operations.

Missourians who need resource referrals or non-emergency help are urged to call 211. The 211 Service is now available for most areas of Missouri and helps citizens with disaster information and referrals. In areas where 211 is not operational, citizens may call 800-427-4626.

Missourians interested in volunteering or making a donation may contact their local chapters of the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, or faith-based group with a disaster mission.
