BOSTON – Attorney General Martha Coakley is currently seeking applicants for the fall 2009 Fellowship Program. The Fellowship Program is an entry-level work program for new attorneys seeking to gain practical legal experience working within the Attorney General’s Office. “This program provides an excellent opportunity for new lawyers to receive hands-on experience while serving the citizens of the Commonwealth.” said Attorney General Coakley. “Work in the Attorney General ’s Office covers a broad legal spectrum and many diverse issues. It is the perfect environment for motivated attorneys to test their skills and develop their legal careers in the public sector.”

The Fellowship Program provides new attorneys the opportunity to gain practical legal experience while working in the largest public sector legal office in the Commonwealth. Fellowship participants will be assigned to work in one of the five bureaus in the Attorney General’s Office and will receive training and supervision in a specific area of practice. The work of the Attorney General’s Office encompasses criminal prosecution, health care advocacy, consumer protection, civil rights, enforcement of labor laws, torts, contracts, eminent domain, administrative law, violence prevention programs, and so much more. In addition to the Boston offices, there are regional offices that serve the Western, Central and Southeastern regions of Massachusetts. To the extent possible, applicant requests for a specific bureau will be honored. Candidates for the program will be selected based on several factors including academic achievement, legal, professional and personal experience relating to the Attorney General’s Office, as well as law journal participation, law school competitions and extracurricular activities.

This is the second year that the Attorney General’s Office has offered the Fellowship Program. Three fellows were selected from last year’ s candidates and will begin work in the Attorney General’s Office this September. The fellows will be working in the Administrative Law, Civil Rights, and Insurance and Unemployment Fraud Divisions.

Participants in the Fellowship Program must commit to a two-year term and must take the Massachusetts bar exam no later than July 2009. For interested fellows, the Attorney General’s Office is prepared to transition successful participants into staff positions at the end of the two-year period. The program begins September 2009.

Interested applicants must submit their application and required written materials to the Attorney General’s Office no later than September 19, 2008.
