Topeka, KS—Today, the Kansas Republican Party issued this statement in response to Supreme Court’s ruling that the Washington, DC gun ban was unconstitutional.
Kansas Republican Party Chairman Kris Kobach stated, “This decision confirms what I have long believed, in my years of research as a Professor of Constitutional Law: that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms held by all law-abiding adult citizens, that the DC ban on handguns is unconstitutional, and that requiring people to keep their guns in the home disabled is also unconstitutional.”
“James Madison, who wrote the words of the Second Amendment, would be proud. Justice Scalia's opinion for the majority nailed it exactly, perfectly expressing the meaning of the right to keep and bear arms.”
Executive Director Christian Morgan added, “Barack Obama has long held positions on this issue that are directly contrary to the Constitution. How can he campaign to be President knowing he will have to take an oath to uphold the Constitution, when he is clearly at odds with that document on this vital issue?”
Morgan continued, “Obama is on record stating, ‘I don’t believe people should be able to own guns.’ This is another example of how Obama is an out-of-touch liberal and is working for change we don’t believe in. I am confident that when Kansans head to the polls in November they will not fall for his empty rhetoric and left-wing policy positions. Instead, they will chose a leader who understands our fundamental Constitutional rights and is ready to lead from day one, John McCain.”
