Shawnee, KS – The National Rifle Association (NRA) named Kansas House Rep. Judy Morrison (R-Shawnee) one of its 2008 Defenders of Freedom. NRA State and Local Affairs Director Randy Kozuch and Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre presented the award to Rep. Morrison earlier this month at the NRA National Convention in Louisville, KY.
“I am honored to be recognized by an organization that stands and fights for principals that I strongly support – Second Amendment rights of all law-abiding citizens,” Rep. Morrison said. “It baffled me that laws regulating gun ownership varied from city to city and county to county in our state. As a legislator, I worked to streamline those regulations and protect my constituents and other Kansans’ right to arm themselves.”
NRA State Liaison Jordon Austin said the Defender of Freedom award was established in 1995 to recognize state legislators and governors who consistently go out of their way, through their actions and achievements, to show their support of the Second Amendment.
“This award was given to Rep. Morrison for her tireless efforts to support the Second Amendment in the state of Kansas,” Austin said. “She has always been a tremendous supporter of the National Rifle Association. Based on the political make up of hers and her surrounding districts, she has stood firm in her beliefs and not waivered in her support. Back in the early days of Concealed Carry legislation, Judy testified in support of this issue and provided personal experiences which were invaluable to the cause. She has always been vocal and out spoken in her support of the Second Amendment.”
Austin said it was also very clear this year in her efforts to help with our Class III legislation that came through her House Federal and State Affairs committee.
“Judy is a true believer and we would not have accomplished all that we have without her support,” Austin said.
In addition to the House Federal and State Affairs committee, Rep. Morrison also serves on the House Energy and Utilities Committee and the House Economic Development and Tourism Committee. She represents the 23rd House District which includes the cities of Merriam and Shawnee (part) in Johnson County.
