(MONTGOMERY)--Attorney General Troy King today announced the indictment and arrest of a Clarke County man for sex crimes in 1990 in Lauderdale County. Brian Keith McGuire, 48, of Jackson, surrendered today at the Lauderdale County Jail. His bond was set at $125,000.

The Attorney General's Office presented evidence to a Lauderdale County grand jury, resulting in McGuire's indictment* yesterday. Specifically, McGuire is charged with one count of first-degree rape, one county of first degree sodomy, and one count of first-degree sexual assault. The victim was a 19-year-old woman in 1990.

"No matter how many years have passed, victims will always deserve that the crimes against them not be forgotten, but are punished," said Attorney General King. "I am determined to pursue justice on their behalf and to bring a measure of peace and comfort to those who have suffered for too long."

No further information about the investigation or about McGuire's alleged crimes other than that stated in the indictment may be released at this time.

If convicted, McGuire faces a maximum penalty of 20 years to life imprisonment and a fine of up to $20,000 for each count of rape and sodomy, both of which are class A felonies, and one to 10 years and a fine of up to $5,000 for the count of first-degree sexual assault, a class C felony.

The case was handled by the Attorney General's Office at the request of the Lauderdale County District Attorney's Office due to a potential conflict of interest. Attorney General King commended Assistant Attorney General Pamela Casey of his Violent Crimes Division and Special Agent Brooke Walker of his Investigations Division, and thanked the Florence Police Department for their work in handling this case.

An indictment is merely an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
