AGRICULTURE AND INDUSTRIES COMMISSIONER: Sparks Issues Eat Local Challenge
FROM THE AGRICULTURE AND INDUSTRIES COMMISSIONER
August 05, 2008
MONTGOMERY – Agriculture & Industries Commissioner Ron Sparks issues an “Eat Local Challenge” in honor of National Farmers Market Week, August 3-9.
This week consumers are encouraged to visit the Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries’ website http://www.agi.alabama.gov where they will find daily tips for becoming a “localvore” for the week. Sparks hopes that enjoying locally grown foods will encourage citizens to continue the healthy habit long after National Farmers Market Week is over.
“Alabama has more than 200 farmers markets and roadside stands that feature fresh Alabama grown products,” says Sparks. “I challenge everyone in Alabama, especially families with young children, to eat locally this week. Not only are we helping local farmers by accepting this challenge, we are becoming healthier and stronger.”
The number of farmers markets in the United States has grown dramatically in recent years, prompting local, regional, and national advocates of local farming to designate a week each year to take note of their benefits. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports over 4,500 farmers markets currently operate throughout the nation. Sales generated by farmers markets have been estimated to exceed $1 billion a year, with most of the money going directly to small family farmers.
Many Alabama products can also be found in grocery stores. Consumers should look for the “Alabama A+” or “Buy Alabama’s Best” logo displayed.
