July 28, 2008

(MONTGOMERY)— Attorney General Troy King today announced that he has selected Julia Jordan Weller to be Interim Chief Administrative Law Judge for the State of Alabama, heading a division of administrative law judges that operate through the Attorney General's Office. Weller's appointment will be effective on August 1.

"We are pleased that Ms. Weller has agreed to serve the State of Alabama in this important capacity, and that the citizens of Alabama will have the benefit of her outstanding legal skills and experience," said Attorney General King. "It is an honor to be selected by Attorney General Troy King for the position of Chief of the Administrative Law Division," said Weller. "No greater calling exists than to serve one's fellow man. Our fundamental purpose will focus on providing efficient and honest services and rendering fair and just decisions respecting both the law and the citizens we serve."

Weller has been Chief Administrative Law Judge for the State Personnel Department. Previously, she served as First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama and as an Assistant United States Attorney from 1998 to 2004, consistently earning awards for superior performance. Prior to entering public service, she was a partner and shareholder in the Montgomery law firm of Robison and Belser. Prior to moving to Montgomery in 1995, she practiced law in Birmingham. Throughout her practice she has litigated cases throughout the State of Alabama. Also, Weller served a federal law clerkship for the Honorable Joel F. Dubina during his tenure as a judge for the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama and for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit.

After earning a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Alabama, Weller earned her juris doctorate at the Cumberland School of Law in 1988. Her undergraduate years included studies abroad in the U.S.S.R. and Austria. Weller's husband, Christopher William Weller, is a shareholder with the Montgomery law firm of Capell and Howard. They have two children, Christopher and Florence. She has served or currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Montgomery Ballet, the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra, the Landmarks Foundation of Montgomery and Grace House Ministries in Fairfield, Alabama. Weller is a native of Montgomery.

The Administrative Law Division was created in 1998 as a separate division to operate with the greatest degree possible of autonomy and independence, in order to provide a neutral panel of judges for administrative hearings by state agencies, boards and commissions.
