(MONTGOMERY)—Attorney General Troy King announced the arrest today of an Anniston woman for two counts of first-degree theft. Charlene Trapp Smith, 59, was arrested by an agent of Attorney General King's Office and taken to the Calhoun County Jail.
Attorney General King's Office presented evidence to a Calhoun County grand jury on June 26, resulting in Smith's indictment*. Specifically, the indictment charges Smith with one count of first-degree theft by deception and one count of first-degree theft, both of which are class B felonies. Each charge involves the same alleged act of theft of more than $2,500 from ForestFund, a provider of worker's compensation insurance for forestry-related businesses.
No further information about the investigation or about Trapp's alleged crimes other than that stated in the indictment may be released at this time.
If convicted, Smith faces a maximum penalty of up to 20 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $30, 000 for each count with which she is charged.
*An indictment is merely an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
